NYU Skirball welcomes the US premiere of the critically acclaimed Brazilian production Tom at the Farm this October

This autumn, Tom at the Farm arrives at the NYU Skirball for its US premiere after an extraordinary journey from a tiny theatre in Rio de Janeiro to a critically acclaimed international theatrical powerhouse. This remarkable production transcends its intimate family drama premise to become “a staggering study of homophobia” (The Guardian, 4*) which speaks directly to urgent issues of violence, patriarchy, repression and masculinity within Brazilian society and the world at large.
When actor Armando Babaioff first read the preface to Michel Marc Bouchard’s play Tom à la ferme, he encountered a sentence that would become the inspiration for the evolution of the production: “Homosexuals learn to lie before they learn to love”. Babaioff acquired the rights to the play, assembled the creative team, assumed the role of producer, and created the Brazilian translation. Under the direction of Rodrigo Portella, the production – which premiered in Rio de Janeiro in 2017 – abandoned naturalism in favour of an original, intensely physical theatrical language. The actors perform on permanently unstable ground: a plastic-covered stage layered with mud, which transforms the stage into a symbolic territory upon which the subtext of power, violence, desire, repression, and silence is tangible.
Performed entirely in Portuguese with English surtitles, at the centre of the story is Tom, who travels to his late partner’s family farm following his death. Upon arrival, he discovers that the mother never knew about their relationship and is unaware that her son was gay. In order to preserve this secret, Tom becomes trapped in a fragile network of manipulation, physical violence, and psychological control imposed by the deceased’s older brother.
Although written in Canada, the play resonated deeply with a Brazil that, in 2017, was experiencing growing political and social polarization, marked by increasingly hostile public discourse and alarming levels of violence against LGBTQIA+ communities.
Tom at the Farm has been performed across Brazil, as well as in Montreal, Avignon, Paris, Brussels, Edinburgh, and Busan, South Korea. After nearly a decade on stage, 27 national and international awards, more than 600 performances, and an audience exceeding 250,000 spectators, Tom at the Farm is “an urgent work in Brazilian theatre … not just important but necessary” (The Stage, 4*). After its performances at NYU Skirball on October 8, 9, and 10, the production will travel to London for performances at the Barbican Centre, October 13-17, 2026.

About Armando Babaioff
Armando Babaioff is a Brazilian actor, producer, and translator with more than twenty-five years of experience in theatre, television, and film. He trained at the Martins Penna State Theatre School and at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO). In 2022, he founded the production company Quadrovivo with the goal of expanding the international reach of his theatrical work. Throughout his stage career, he has appeared in productions such as The Graduate by Mike Nichols, Miss Julie by August Strindberg, In the Solitude of the Cotton Fields by Bernard-Marie Koltès—earning a nomination for the APTR Best Actor Award—and Gota d’Água by Chico Buarque. After an extensive career in Brazilian television and cinema, Babaioff acquired the rights to Michel Marc Bouchard’s Tom at the Farm in 2015. He translated the play into Portuguese, produced the Brazilian adaptation, and stars in the title role. Since its premiere in 2017, Tom at the Farm has toured extensively in Brazil and abroad, receiving some of the country’s most prestigious theatre awards, including the Shell, APTR, APCA, and Cesgranrio Awards, as well as international recognition from the Quebec Theatre Critics Association and other institutions. For his performance as Tom, Babaioff has received multiple nominations and awards for Best Actor.
About Rodrigo Portella
Rodrigo Portella is a renowned Brazilian theatre director, playwright and performer, with a career spanning over 30 years. His directorial work on Tom at the Farm has received critical acclaim, earning him the Shell Theatre Award and the APCA Award for Best Director. Portella’s productions are known for their minimalist staging and intense emotional depth, often exploring themes of identity, power, and human connection. His work has been showcased in over 90 cities across Brazil and internationally, including in France, Canada, and Germany.
About Michel Marc Bouchard
Michel Marc Bouchard is a distinguished Canadian playwright, screenwriter, and librettist, renowned for his profound exploration of human relationships and societal taboos. With over 25 plays to his name, his works have been translated into multiple languages and performed in more than 50 countries. Notable plays include Les Feluettes (Lilies), Les Muses orphelines (The Orphan Muses), and Tom à la ferme (Tom at the Farm). His contributions to the arts have earned him numerous honours, including the Order of Canada, Knight of the National Order of Quebec and, most recently, a Knight of Arts and Letters of the French Republic. Tom at the Farm has been adapted into a film by Xavier Dolan and has inspired international productions, including Armando Babaioff’s acclaimed Brazilian adaptation, which brings a poignant, culturally resonant perspective to Bouchard’s original work.

Neste outono, Tom na Fazenda chega ao NYU Skirball para sua estreia nos EUA após uma jornada extraordinária, partindo de um pequeno teatro no Rio de Janeiro para se tornar uma força teatral internacional aclamada pela crítica. Esta produção notável transcende a premissa de um drama familiar íntimo para se tornar “um estudo impressionante sobre a homofobia” (The Guardian, 4*), que dialoga diretamente com questões urgentes de violência, patriarcado, repressão e masculinidade na sociedade brasileira e no mundo.
Quando o ator Armando Babaioff leu pela primeira vez o prefácio da peça de Michel Marc Bouchard, Tom à la ferme, ele encontrou uma frase que se tornaria a inspiração para a evolução da produção: “Os homossexuais aprendem a mentir antes de aprenderem a amar”. Babaioff adquiriu os direitos da peça, reuniu a equipe criativa, assumiu o papel de produtor e fez a tradução brasileira. Sob a direção de Rodrigo Portella, a produção — que estreou no Rio de Janeiro em 2017 — abandonou o naturalismo em favor de uma linguagem teatral original e intensamente física. Os atores atuam sobre um solo permanentemente instável: um palco coberto de plástico e coberto por uma camada de lama, que transforma a cena em um território simbólico onde o subtexto de poder, violência, desejo, repressão e silêncio se torna tangível.
Encenada inteiramente em português com legendas em inglês, a história gira em torno de Tom, que viaja para a fazenda da família de seu falecido companheiro após a morte deste. Ao chegar, ele descobre que a mãe nunca soube do relacionamento dos dois e ignora o fato de que o filho era gay. Para preservar esse segredo, Tom se vê preso em uma frágil rede de manipulação, violência física e controle psicológico imposta pelo irmão mais velho do falecido.
Embora tenha sido escrita no Canadá, a peça ressoou profundamente com o Brasil de 2017, que vivia uma crescente polarização política e social, marcada por um discurso público cada vez mais hostil e níveis alarmantes de violência contra as comunidades LGBTQIA+.
Tom na Fazenda já foi encenado por todo o Brasil, além de passagens por Montreal, Avignon, Paris, Bruxelas, Edimburgo e Busan (Coreia do Sul). Após quase uma década em cartaz, 27 prêmios nacionais e internacionais, mais de 600 apresentações e um público superior a 250.000 espectadores, Tom na Fazenda é “uma obra urgente no teatro brasileiro… não apenas importante, mas necessária” (The Stage, 4*). Após as apresentações no NYU Skirball nos dias 8, 9 e 10 de outubro, a produção seguirá para Londres para apresentações no Barbican Centre, de 13 a 17 de outubro de 2026.

Sobre Armando Babaioff
Armando Babaioff é um ator, produtor e tradutor brasileiro com mais de vinte e cinco anos de experiência no teatro, na televisão e no cinema. Formou-se na Escola Técnica de Teatro Martins Penna e na Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO). Em 2022, fundou a produtora Quadrovivo com o objetivo de expandir o alcance internacional do seu trabalho teatral. Ao longo da sua carreira nos palcos, atuou em produções como A Primeira Noite de um Homem (The Graduate) de Mike Nichols, Senhorita Julia de August Strindberg, Na Solidão dos Campos de Algodão de Bernard-Marie Koltès — que lhe rendeu uma indicação ao Prêmio APTR de Melhor Ator — e Gota d’Água de Chico Buarque. Após uma longa trajetória na televisão e no cinema brasileiros, Babaioff adquiriu os direitos de Tom na Fazenda de Michel Marc Bouchard em 2015. Traduziu a peça para o português, produziu a adaptação brasileira e interpreta o papel do protagonista. Desde a estreia em 2017, Tom na Fazenda realizou intensas turnês no Brasil e no exterior, recebendo alguns dos prêmios mais prestigiados do teatro do país, incluindo Shell, APTR, APCA e Cesgranrio, além do reconhecimento internacional da Associação dos Críticos de Teatro de Quebec e de outras instituições. Por sua atuação como Tom, Babaioff recebeu diversas indicações e prêmios de Melhor Ator.
